Adozinda - Zulmiro - Ivandra - Fedra - Limoso - Rachid - Branca - Haller - Madalena
Adozinda was born in 1995, when the author, Sofia Ester, published her first book. Adozinda is a fifteen year old sorceress who lives is Lisbon. Like all sorceresses, Adozinda has a magic broom. In her spare time, she flies people around Lisbon, helping them to avoid the city's heavy traffic. Thanks to that, Adozinda makes some extra money, which she invests in music records, fashionable clothes, books, sweets, among other things.
Adozinda is a restless, and, sometimes, childish girl. She seldom thinks about the consequences of her actions. One time, while making an omelette, the kitchen caught fire. On another occasion a weather spell got out of hand, and it snowed in Lisbon. Adozinda's grandmother predicted that this young girl would have a great future in the magical arts. But Adozinda is too impatient and her ambitious plans frequently get her involved in big problems.
Like all other kids her age, Adozinda also goes to school. She is found of drawing and painting and likes all kinds of sports. Adozinda lives in a small white house near Monsanto. Monsanto is a forest in the centre of Lisbon. All sorts of mysteries live in the shadows of this forest. Many haven seen ghosts. Others say that enchanted Moors still go around, trapped since the ancient times when Portugal was Arab. In the garden of her house, Adozinda has carnivorous plants. But don't be scared if you would like to visit this young sorceress. She is a funny girl, and likes making new friends. Besides, the carnivorous plants are only bad to thieves. Zulmiro is Adozinda's best friend. He is an Astronomy student and a typical intellectual. You will always find him next to his books, or looking at the stars through his telescope. He is a very calm person, and behind his round eyeglasses shine sincere and kind eyes. Zulmiro isn't a very social person, but people who know him soon come to trust in him.
Nevertheless, I advise you to respect, or even fear, his benevolent eyes, for they are capable of seeing deep into a person's soul and can read you like an open book.
Zulmiro hates fighting or arguing. But, again, don't let that fool you. When necessary he can be courageous to the point of risking his own life.
Zulmiro is fascinated with Adozinda's energy and strength. Besides, the young sorceress' childish side makes him feel kind of like her elder brother, always ready to help or to give good advice, which Adozinda rarely listens to. Ivandra is the founder of the University of Magic, in Lisbon. People who meet her immediatly notice her dark, profound and cold eyes. This middle aged woman strives everyday for the survival of magic and of the old traditions in our modern world. Limoso is, for sure, the most popular professor in the University of Magic. He is also a successful and rich entrepreneur who likes pleasing everybody. Limoso never forgets sending birthday cards, and always has nice words at the tip of his tongue. But, even though his best efforts, there are people who don't like him. Rumours say that there are fierce conflicts between him and Ivandra. Nevertheless, in public, they are always polite to each other. Fedra is the most famous teacher in the University of Magic. This skinny blue eyed witch constantly surprises her fellow wizards with new breathtaking spells. Many magicians don't agree with her revolutionary theories, but they are all curious for knowing her most recent discoveries in the magical arts.
Unfortunately, Fedra is also famous for the worst reasons. She has a quick temper, and rapidly gets angry if people don't understand her sinuous and complex thinking.
In the beginning of their careers Fedra and Ivandra, the founder of the University of Magic, opened an office to help people with their magic. But clients soon stopped showing up because Fedra's bad temper and lack of patience scared them. Rachid is an enchanted Moor who wanders through the corridors of the ancient castle of the University of Magic.
When the Christians conquered Lisbon, in middle of all the confusion and fight, Rachid's parents couldn't take him with them. So, they left him enchanted, invisible to the mortal eyes. They hoped to come back soon, and save their son, but Lisbon remained in the hands of the Christian conquerors.
Rachid has been imprisoned for centuries but he still hopes to return to his family. Only one special person can set him free, and Rachid thinks he has found this rare individual. But he must be extremely cautious. If he reveals himself to the wrong person, he will be punished and will remain enchanted forever. Branca is a young girl from a small Portuguese rural village. She intends to become a professional sorceress, but studying in the University of Magic isn’t easy. Spells are complicated, the magical broom rarely obeys and the professors, especially Fedra, are severe.
Branca often fells sad, but she is determined not go give up on her dreams. Haller is a teacher in the University of Magic. People often mistake him for his father, who was a respected and competent wizard. Sadly, Haller is not half the sorcerer his father was. Ivandra invited him to join the University of Magic mostly because of his surname.
Nobody gives great credit to Haller's professional skills, so Ivandra provided him with a luxurious office, fitting of his surname, and easy tasks so that little damage could eventually arise from his actions. Madalena is Adozinda's mother. She is a journalist, and most of the time, she is working outside Portugal.
Adozinda misses her mother. However, being on her own has strengthened Adozinda's independence.
